The Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics will host the workshop From Matrimonial Ads to Dating Apps: Unraveling the Partnering Market on 4–5 June 2026.
Organized by Joana Maria Pujadas and Paul Puschmann, the workshop will bring together scholars interested in the evolution of partnering markets and mate selection across time and societies.
Partner selection is often considered a private decision, yet its implications extend far beyond the individual and the couple, influencing families, communities, and society as a whole. Partnering practices both shape and reflect social inequalities, with the capacity to challenge or reinforce existing social structures. Understanding how partnering markets function—and why and how they change over time—is therefore essential for researchers across disciplines, including demography, history, sociology, biology, and genetics.
The workshop is funded by the International Network for Historical Demography (HiDo), the Asociación de Demografía Histórica (ADEH), and the Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics (CED).
