Alignment, clocking, and macro patterns of episodes in the life course
Abstract.-
We introduce the concepts of clocking and alignment as a new framework for generating novel macro patterns and statistics from simulated or observed life trajectory data. We give a variety of example applications in different areas of demography. These include i) simulated health and employment examples based on HRS data, ii) fertility and union trajectories derived from Colombian DHS data, and iii) residency status examples using MAFE data. We generate several new patterns and measures in the areas of health, family, and labor demography. An R package is presented to facilitate experimentation with these operations.
