The seminar presents a practical framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in research, based on an infographic adapted from the PIO model (Transparency, Fairness, Safety, Accountability, Privacy, Autonomy, and Sustainability).

The content is structured around three steps: identifying the stage of the research process (discovery, implementation, analysis, writing, publication, dissemination, or impact), determining the level of AI use (from A0, no AI use, to A4, substantial AI involvement), and applying the corresponding verification procedures. For each combination of research stage and AI-use level, the seminar outlines typical activities, key risks (such as hallucinations, automation bias, or undetected errors), and a specific verification focus.

The objectives of the seminar are to:

• Equip researchers with the skills required to document the use of AI, including where it was used, the role it played, the researcher’s contribution, and the methods employed for verification.
• Identify the level of risk (low, moderate, or high) associated with each use case.
• Apply the PIO principles as an ethical checklist for responsible AI use.
• Distinguish between acceptable uses and high-risk applications (A4) that require the highest degree of transparency.
