Short Abstract

Multi-partner fertility (MPF) – having children with more than one partner – has grown significantly in high income settings driven, in large part, by increases in divorce and repartnering. The topic has not received much attention in the African context despite high rates of divorce and remarriage and the increasing difficulty in getting married for those in low-income communities. In this analysis, we draw on the results of a vignette experiment, survey and qualitative data from the JAMO project in Nairobi, Kenya to analyze: 1) variation in perceptions of MPF; 2) the extent to which perceptions of MPF vary by experience of MPF and 3) whether receipt of kin support by mothers differs by MPF status. Preliminary findings from the vignette experiment suggest that MPF carries some stigma and could explain lower support from in-laws, but there is no relationship between perceptions and actual fertility.
