Little is known about couples’ shared time and how actual time spent together varies over the life course, how it has changed over time, or how it varies across place. We take a broader view of shared time than previous research by examining different types of shared time based on what activities couples do together and who is present. Using recent time use survey data from the United States, we document how much time couples spend together and discuss relationships between spousal interaction and momentary assessments of well-being. We consider how couples' shared time has changed over the past 50 years by examining data spanning 1965-2012. In addition, we compare the time spent together between couples in the Unites States and those in Spain and France. Key differences between couples in the U.S. and in other countries include employment and parental statuses.
