Abstract.- The impact of L’Aquila earthquake on demographic changes.
This paper analyses the consequences on demographic changes observed in the municipalities of Abruzzo region after the earthquake of L’Aquila in 2009.
The main earthquake in L’Aquila occurred on the night of 6 April 2009. This and other tremors caused the death of 309 people. This earthquake in Abruzzo region involved almost 50 municipalities, in the provinces of L’Aquila, but also in the provinces of Pescara and Teramo.
Several studies have been carried out at international level to highlight the economic and social consequences that earthquakes have on populations. Some of these studies have shown that these consequences are also influenced by the pre-existing territorial context and vulnerabilities.
The aim of this work is to understand how population growth changed after the earthquake, by analysing population dynamics in the municipalities affected by the earthquake and in the other municipalities of the Abruzzo region. We look at the long-run effects of earthquakes on population growth across municipalities of Abruzzo during the period of 2009–2017 and we apply a spatial regression model to understand the associations between population growth and the socio-economic variables after the earthquakes in the short-term period and long-term period. Relying on ISTAT data on the population in the municipalities, we finally offer a general model of how environmental disaster might affect population and displacement and suggest the main challenges related to the post-disaster governance.
