Abstract

Empirical evidence suggests women often face significant social and economic challenges with geographical mobility, while men generally experience improved employment prospects. Although this difference is generally attributed to the role of family migration, the impact of couple migration on the occupational opportunities of men and women remains underexplored. By adopting a gender perspective, this study analyzes how different couple mobility patterns influence occupational opportunities in Europe. Gender differences are also considered according to educational levels, examining the effects of migration in the medium and long term, both before and after relocation. Within the general framework where men consistently have better employment opportunities following internal mobility, results reveal distinct and sometimes contrasting effects of various couple mobility patterns on the employment opportunities of women, particularly those with medium to low levels of education. Moreover, some specific patterns of mobility, such as when the man moves first and the woman joins later, tend to accumulate disadvantages over the life course. Conversely, for all men and highly educated women, geographical mobility is systematically associated with improved job prospects, irrespective of educational attainment or the manner of relocation.
