Chia Liu.- Work-migration-life balance: Patterns of immigrant labor market trajectory by parity

Abstract.- Using retrospective and prospective biography from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we examine the timing and level by which male and female immigrants move in and out of the labor market after arrival to Germany using Kaplan-Meier estimations and piecewise constant hazards models. Parenthood strongly influences immigrant women’s propensity to engage in the labor market as expected but substantial heterogeneity exist among migrant groups, even with legal status to work controlled for (e.g. EU or ethnic Germans versus non-EU or refugee). On the other hand, with parity taken into account, Turkish women are still far less likely to engage in the labor market compared to women from other backgrounds, suggesting a strong division of work by gender. Our work contributes to the understanding of the complexity behind family and work for immigrants by taking a life course perspective.
