Abstract
In the recent years, (post-) industrialized countries have seen many crises (e.g. the Great Recession, COVID-19, the energy crisis, the climate change crisis, wars), and the prospect is that there are more to come. Yet our understanding of how crises (in particular, an interaction between macro- and micro-level crises) affect people’s lives is rather poor. This paper studies the conditions of crises’ impacts by describing individuals’ (economic) wellbeing after the experience of two micro-crises (partner loss and job loss) pre-, during-, and post the Great Recession. We use the Comparative Panel File (CPF) for the USA, Switzerland, Germany, and the UK, with an analytical sample for our analyses existing of 1,131,976 person years (202,282 individuals). We use fixed effects models (for men and women separately) to examine short-term crisis impacts on income, financial satisfaction, and life satisfaction using repeated observations for individuals. Even though partner loss and job loss have quite comparable negative effects on well-being, we did not find a clear impact of the Great Recession on (economic) well-being after partner loss and job loss, apart from a few contexts. Policies should target more at being a safety net for people experiencing a micro-crisis.
