Abstract: Internal migration levels and trends vary greatly, with some countries registering stability or decline, while rising migration intensities are found elsewhere. The dynamics of population mobility, and ultimately cross-national variations, remain, however, poorly understood because they are almost exclusively analysed by applying period measures to cross-sectional data. In this seminar, Dr Bernard will present a suite of newly-developed cohort-based measures of migration, including completed migration, migration timing, migration spacing, and migration progression ratios that can be used to systematically quantify migration levels and patterns across countries and over time. Two case studies will be used to demonstrate the benefits of a cohort approach: (1) long-term trends in cohort migration in England and (2) cross-national variations in cohort migration 14 European countries, including Spain.
