Abstract.- In this presentation, Professor Yu Xie reports findings from several recent studies on the contemporary Chinese family, which has undergone rapid transitions over the past few decades. It has been found that union formation in China increasingly mirrors patterns commonly observed in the West, including delayed marriage ages and prevalent practices of premarital cohabitation. Despite below-replacement fertility levels, childlessness remains rare among married Chinese couples. Moreover, almost all children are born and raised within marriage, with virtually no incidence of nonmarital childbearing in China. Socioeconomic status has become a crucial determinant of marriage and a significant criterion for mate selection. Educational assortative mating has also increased substantially. These research findings suggest
that while the Chinese family has changed due to modernization and economic development, it remains influenced by Confucian culture.
