Títol: Life Expectancy Declines During the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Worsening U.S. Longevity Disadvantage

Abstract: For several decades, the United States (U.S.) has experienced a growing health disadvantage relative to other high-income countries marked by higher rates of morbidity and mortality. The trend has been pervasive, involving almost all age groups and diverse health conditions and contributing to premature deaths. Effects on life expectancy have mounted since the late 1970s, when U.S. life expectancy began to lose pace with increases in peer countries. The resulting life expectancy gap between the United States and other high-income countries widened dramatically after 2010, when U.S. life expectancy plateaued in the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic and then plummeted in 2020 and 2021. This presentation will discuss mortality trends in the United States, 1980-2021, by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and some specific causes of death and discuss the trends in an international comparative context. New methods for estimating 2020 and 2021 life expectancy will be described and applied to official and provisional data for U.S. populations and to Human Mortality Database data for 19 other high-income countries. In 2020, U.S. life expectancy declines (a) were much larger than in peer countries, (b) involved deaths across a younger age range, and (c) were substantially larger for racialized and marginalized populations than for white populations. In 2021, while most peer countries experienced increases in life expectancy, the United States continued to experience a large life expectancy decline, driven by increases in deaths among young adulthood and midlife.
