The Heterogeneity in the Morbidity-Mortality profile from 1990 to 2019

Abstract
In the last two centuries, most countries have been progressively advancing in the epidemiological transition, characterized by the changes in the morbidity and mortality profile. However, some countries have been experiencing a juxtaposition of stages since they face several obstacles in improving health conditions. As a result, these countries have a great heterogeneity in the morbidity-mortality profile. Although the overlapping of the stages of the epidemiological transition is more evident in less developed countries, it is not exclusive to these countries. Recently, Bergeron-Boucher et al. (2020) showed a slight increase in causes of death diversification in low-mortality countries over the past 20 years. There are still no studies in the literature that discuss the variability of the population’s morbidity profile. This study aims to analyze the heterogeneity in the morbidity-mortality profile at the global level from 1990 to 2019, using the Global Burden of Disease database. In addition to contributing to a deeper understanding of the epidemiological transition, we hope this study also provides evidence to public health policies.
