Abstract.- The role of nonresident family in internal migration and immobility.
Research on internal migration within Western countries has generally relied on the premise that internal migration is mainly related to work and education. In this lecture I present a selection of research findings from the FamilyTies project, supported by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The findings are based on data for the UK, Germany and Sweden. They convincingly show that nonresident family is an important deterrent of internal migration and also a driver of it, depending on where the family members live. Nonresident family is also frequently mentioned as a motive for internal migration.
