Conferència.- The link between social network and mental health for exogamous couples in old age.

Abstract.– In later life stages, social ties become increasingly important for one’s mental health. We explore the extent to which exogamy benefits migrants through extending local social network by marriage by using the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). Preliminary results show that exogamous migrants fare better than endogamous migrants, but are not at parity with endogamous Germans. Social network partly explains the differentials between the groups, yet important differences remain after controlling for socio-demographic factors and social networks. This work serves to enrich the discussion on the role family plays for transnational individuals, particularly in later life stage, as migrants age in destination societies.
