Abstract
In this seminar, we present and discuss our new subnational version of the Gender Development Index (GDI) of the UNDP. With this new SGDI, it becomes possible to study inequalities in human development between males and females on a global scale with ten times more detail than has been possible before. In the first part of the presentation, the definition and construction of the SGDI and the global pattern of gender inequality it reveals will be discussed by Jeroen Smits. In the second part, Iñaki Permanyer shows how the new gender-disaggregated data at subnational level can be used to quantify how much of the inequality in human development we observe within world countries can be attributable to differences among women, differences among men, or differences between women and men.
