Abstract

Since 2010 fertility level in Norway has dropped from among the highest in Europe to below average (from 1.98 in 2009 to 1.41 in 2022). With this as the backdrop, I will in this presentation discuss whether global uncertainty prevent young people from having children as a possible source of the drastic drop in fertility level. I will present a study investigating whether worries about global issues influence fertility intentions independent of their actual situation. This is built on the insight that globalization, social media, and new digital technologies have brought the world closer together and individual life-course decisions are nowadays also embedded in a global context. We use the Norwegian Generation and Gender Survey 2020.
