Course description

The objective of this course is to introduce students to qualitative methods in research that have been used in Demography. The specific goals of the course are to: First, introduce students to theoretical aspects related to qualitative methods; Second, Build an understanding on how qualitative methods answer research questions by learning how to design a qualitative study, how to collect and analyze data and how to disseminate results; Third, develop skills on the use of quantitative and qualitative methods for research.

  • What is qualitative research?
  • Overview of different qualitative methods
  • How can theory inform qualitative research and how can qualitative research build theory?
  • How to design a qualitative study and how to collect and analyze qualitative data?
  • How to disseminate qualitative results?
  • Developing skills on qualitative and quantitative methods

Learning Highlights

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Identify research methods that are most adequate to answer their research questions, and understand how to design a study using qualitative methods, mixed-methods or a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Students will learn to analyze qualitative data, and disseminate findings from qualitative research

Target audience

The course will be useful to PhD students and researchers that are interested in understanding and applying qualitative methods in their studies.

Required training or equipment

No need to have knowledge in qualitative methods since it is an introductory course.

We will use laptops for two classes, therefore, students must bring their own laptop.

Lecturer

Fernanda Fortes de Lena

Fernanda is a Latin American demographer. She has experience with fieldwork in healthcare environments as well as applying qualitative methods with LGBTQ+ population and has published in the field. Coordinator of the Network of LGBTQ+ Studies in Demography of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Población (ALAP).

Mariana Calderón Jaramillo

Mariana is a sociologist, currently conducting her PhD in Demography. She has academic training on qualitative research projects and experience in field work, data collection and analysis. Her previous work and interests are focused in sexual and reproductive rights, public health, care, aging, migrations, and the relationships between science, medicine and technology.
